  • Review your school's SALT visit report.
  • Describe two areas of improvement for your school as suggested by their SALT report.
  • For each area, explain how this is apparent in your classes. (U)

NKHS does not have a SALT visit report. Therefore, I used the District Strategic Plan which can be found on the school webpage or at the following link: NKHS District Strategic Plan

In this link, there is not a list of areas that need improvement, but rather goals NKHS wishes to accomplish. Two of those goals are to:
  • To achieve 75% proficiency (in all subgroups) within two years, 85% proficiency within three years, and 90% within four years by reducing the number of "partially proficient" and "substantially below proficient" students to less than 10% within four years. Measured by the NECAP testing.
  • To maintain a fiscally responsible and financially stable operating budget that reflects sound business practices, creativity and innovation, and supports a world-class education.

The first goal is that the school wants to improve their NECAP scores. As for how this is apparent in my classroom, I would have to say that I see it more with the teachers trying to teach to the NECAP. Teachers are really trying to prepare their students for NECAP testing as best they can by emphasizing the topics covered by the NECAP, preparing students for the format of the NECAP, and by stressing the importance of doing well on the test itself.

As for the second goal that the school has set for itself, I feel that this is more of an administration related topic, and therefore is not as present in my classroom. Although, I do have to say that NKHS is a new school and it provides students with the tools they need to succeed. Most of the classroom have Smart Boards in them. Every classroom has a computer for the teacher and for the students to use; most classrooms contain multiple computers for students. Every classroom has a mounted TV in the room, where the morning announcements take place amongst other things. The media center is brand new, and there are multiple lap top carts that are available for teachers' use. I personally do not know the budget situation here, but I feel that the students here are given many tools, especially technology based, to suceed here.

HI Dania,

You make some interesting observations about how Ts are preparing their Ss for the NECAPS. The science NECAPs are coming up in the spring. You might want to point the NKHS science department to the NECAP item analysis pages on RIScienceTeachers. What strategies are you using in your class to prepare Ss for the NECAP? - fogleman fogleman Feb 7, 2010
